Gangtok, Sikkim: Flash floods have struck the Himalayan state of Sikkim following a cloudburst, resulting in significant damage, including the washing away of portions of the National Highway.
According to the Central Water Commission, the Teesta river’s water level was reported to be below the warning level at 6 am on Wednesday. However, it was anticipated to surpass its warning level within the next six hours, indicating the potential for worsening flood conditions.
The flash floods were triggered by a cloudburst over the Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim on Tuesday. The floodwaters rushed down the Teesta River, inundating villages and washing away bridges and roads.
Over 2,000 tourists were stranded in North Sikkim due to the flash floods and landslides. The Indian Army and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have launched rescue and relief operations.
The BRO is working to restore the National Highway, which is the only road connecting North Sikkim to the rest of the state. However, it is likely to take several days for the road to be reopened.
The Sikkim government has advised tourists to avoid traveling to the state until the flood situation improves.
