The Union Government has informed the Supreme Court that it cannot provide a specific timeline for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, but is prepared to hold elections in the region. The Centre clarified that the Union Territory status of J&K is temporary.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that the uncertainty in giving a timeframe for elections is due to recurring law and order disturbances in the region. However, substantial progress has been made towards restoring statehood.

While the Centre presented statistics on the situation in the valley, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the petitioners, contested the data. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Chandrachud emphasized that the case will be decided based on constitutional arguments, not statistics.
The CJI had earlier highlighted the evolution of J&K’s autonomy and integration since 1950. The petitions challenge the abrogation of Article 370 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
