The meeting between Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush and Cohen has incited widespread anger in Libya. Political parties swiftly denounced the event, and hundreds of Libyans took to the streets in cities such as Tripoli, Al-Zawiya, Benghazi, and Al-Marj to express their vehement opposition. The House of Representatives and various political blocs demanded that the Attorney General launch an investigation into the matter.
Legal Framework
The Supreme Council of State unequivocally condemned any contacts with the “Zionist entity” at any level. It emphasized the importance of adhering to national principles and laws criminalizing contacts with Israel.
Libyan Law No. 62, enacted in 1957, prohibits any individual or entity from entering into agreements with persons or entities residing in Israel or affiliated with it in any capacity. The council, comprising 48 members out of a total of 145, convened in Tripoli to discuss the repercussions of the encounter between the Foreign Ministers.
