Mahuru Māori is back for 2023! This month-long kaupapa (initiative) aims to normalize te reo Māori (the Māori language) in everyday situations. Participants are asked to consciously use as much te reo as they can during the Māori lunar calendar’s month of Mahuru, which this year runs from 15 September to 14 October.
Mahuru Māori is a great opportunity to learn more about te reo Māori and to practice using it in everyday situations. There are many ways to get involved, such as:
- Taking the Mahuru Māori Reo Challenge. This challenge encourages you to commit to speaking a certain amount of te reo Māori each day during Mahuru. You can choose a challenge that suits your level of proficiency, from greeting and farewells to more complex conversations.
- Attending a te reo Māori class or workshop. There are many different te reo Māori classes and workshops available, both in person and online. This is a great way to learn the basics of the language or to improve your existing skills.
- Watching te reo Māori TV shows and movies. There is a growing range of te reo Māori TV shows and movies available. Watching these shows and movies is a fun and immersive way to learn the language and culture.
- Listening to te reo Māori music. There are many talented te reo Māori musicians. Listening to their music is a great way to support the language and culture, and to learn new vocabulary and phrases.
- Speaking te reo Māori with friends and family. One of the best ways to learn and improve your te reo Māori skills is to practice speaking it with others. If you know someone who speaks te reo Māori, ask them to help you practice.
