The cantonal council of Solothurn has approved new regulations on election posters, paving the way for the posters to go ahead as planned.
The SVP had argued that the new rules were too complex and would come too close to the election date, but the cantonal council disagreed, saying that the changes were minimal and would not affect the democratic process.

Under the new rules, parties will be able to start putting up election posters six weeks before the election, from Saturday at 7am instead of only on Sunday. The posters can also be slightly larger. However, they will still be prohibited in schools and other cantonal buildings.
The decision is a victory for the government and the State Chancellery, who had proposed the new rules in an effort to simplify the election advertising process. It is also a setback for the SVP, which had hoped to derail the election campaign by blocking the new rules.
The cantonal council’s decision is likely to be welcomed by political parties in Solothurn, who will now be able to start campaigning without any further delays. It is also likely to be welcomed by voters in Solothurn, who will now have a clearer understanding of the election rules.
The new rules will come into effect for the next cantonal election, which is scheduled to take place on 25 September 2023.
